A question I’m often asked is, “Where did you find your book publisher?” The answer is, “I didn’t. My literary agent did.”* But the truth is, how to find a home for your book has changed dramatically. Print-on-demand capabilities have changed the game for authors.

That said, if you want have your book published by a third party who’ll do the editing, marketing, layout and distibution, you’re going to need an agent. Though an agent is no guarantee your book will find a home. Whether you decide to put your work out yourself or look for a publisher, going through this process will lay the groundwork for successfully marketing your book. Like it or not, the selling part of writing matters.

To have the best chance of selling your idea, you’ll want to know the specific agents most likely to be interested in your material. Your book could be the next Eat, Pray, Love, but if you send it to an agent looking for dystopian horror, your email will be ignored.

I write entertaining stories that sneak up on you. FLORIDA GIRLS, about a troupe of swimsuit models on a war bond tour who take on the Tampa mafia, is out now.
